The photos of the Alien planet turn out to be useless because of an onboard fault which prevented transmission of the range and magnification figures. Straker refuses to believe that the photos are useless until he is given a demonstration of how ordinary objects (like Lt. Ellis' leg!) can look like planetary features at extreme magnifications. back
