Barry Gray Music Sampler

Barry Gray is best known for creating the music for most of Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's television series in the 1960's and 70's -- notably FIREBALL XL5, THUNDERBIRDS, UFO, and SPACE:1999. While some of this music was commercially released, much of it was not, and most which was is long out-of-print.  As such, fans of Barry Gray's music have little they can buy commercially, although this situation has improved in recent years with various FANDERSON and SILVA SCREEN releases on compact disc.

In order to make some of this rare music more widely available, here are some MP3 files containing some pieces of Barry Gray music.

The Frog's Wooing -- Prior to working with Gerry Anderson, Barry Gray was accompanist/arranger for singer Vera Lynn in the 1940's and 1950's. In the late 1950's they released 3 EP's containing children's songs & standard nursery rhymes. Here's a track from the 1959 EP "Nursery Rhymes sung by Vera Lynn" (1.1 MB, mono, 2 min 33 sec, recorded April 1959, released September 1959)

The Twizzle Song -- this is the first track from the first record based on the first Gerry Anderson television series, "The Adventures of Twizzle".  Arranged & conducted by Barry Gray, music by Leslie Clair (who hummed the tune into a tape recorder!), and lyrics by Roberta Leigh.  (991k, mono, 2 min 7 sec, recorded September 1957, released April 1958)

"Torchy the Battery Boy" End Theme -- commercially unreleased, this is the end theme to Gerry Anderson's second puppet series, "Torchy the Battery Boy". Music & lyrics by Roberta Leigh, arranged & conducted by Barry Gray (491k, mono, 1 min 3 sec, recorded March 1958)

Four Feather Falls -- here is the theme to this 1960 Gerry Anderson series.  This is a rare stereo version which was released on a six song EP.  Vocals by Michael Holliday (1.9 MB, stereo, 2 min 8 sec, recorded May 1959)

Supercar Theme, Series 2 -- here is the title music for the final 13 episodes of Gerry Anderson's "Supercar", with vocals by the Mike Sammes Singers. Note that this is a stereo MP3 consisting of two independent tracks -- one with only the music and the other with the vocals. This music is also included on Fanderson's Supercar & Fireball XL-5 soundtrack CD, but on this the music cannot be isolated from the vocals. (865K, stereo, 44 sec, recorded August 1961)

Supercar Theme / Charles Blackwell Orchestra -- pull out your dancing shoes, because this high-energy instrumental version of Barry Gray's Supercar Theme is bound to get you movin'!   This was released as a single and was arranged by Charles Blackwell, who also arranged the opening titles for Fireball XL5  (1.0 MB, mono, 2 min 17 sec, released May 1962)

Fireball -- This is an extended version of the Fireball XL5 end theme, which is a minute longer than what is heard in the series and on the Fanderson CD. This version was commercially released as a single, and reached number 32 in the UK charts -- the only chart hit Barry Gray ever made! Accompaniment directed by Charles Blackwell, and vocal by Don Spencer (982k, mono, 2 min 6 sec, released March 1963)

Fireball XL5 "Zero-G" -- originally released as a single in 1964 by "Barry Gray and his Spacemakers", this fast-paced piece is introduced by Steve Zodiac, Venus, and Robert the Robot.  Please note that a lot of music from Fireball XL5 is available on CD from Fanderson (1.1 MB, mono, 2 min 26 sec, recorded February 1962)

Stingray Opening Titles -- this is the opening title music to Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's 1964 TV series "Stingray", with vocals by the Mike Sammes Singers. Note that this is different than the Stingray theme heard on the "No Strings Attached" CD (574K, mono, 1 min 14 sec, recorded August 1963, never released commercially)

Stingray "March of the Oysters" -- This catchy march was originally released in 1968 on a 78 RPM 12" vinyl record for radio station background music, and was not available commercially until 1992, when it appeared on Silva Screen's "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." CD, and then on Cinephile's remastered "No Strings Attached" CD (846k, mono, 1 min 49 sec, recorded January 1964)

Thunderbirds Fast Music  -- unreleased commercially, this fast-paced music is featured during the episode highlights part of the Thunderbirds opening titles.  It is also featured during a rescue attempt in the first Thunderbirds episode, "Trapped in the Sky"  (863 KB, mono, 1 min 51 sec, recorded Dec 1964)

Century 21 March -- Here is Barry Gray's "Century 21 March", which is a rousing arrangement of the well-known Thunderbirds theme, and was released on the 1965 mini-album "Century 21 Themes" (946k, mono, 2 min 2 sec, recorded July 1965, released October 1965)

Thunderbirds Theme -- originally released as a single in December 1965, this is virtually identical to the opening and closing titles heard in the "Thunderbirds" TV series (1.1 MB, mono, 2 min 34 sec, recorded November 1965)

Unused Thunderbirds Theme -- unreleased commercially and unheard in the series, this music was originally intended to be the opening theme music for Thunderbirds!  The vocal is by Gary Miller, who did the vocals on the Stingray end theme "Aqua Marina" (555k, mono, 1 min 11 sec, recorded August 1965)

Thunderbirds "Sun Probe" Collision Course -- commercially unreleased, this is rather exciting music heard in the Thunderbirds episode "Sun Probe", when Thunderbird 3 is on a collision course with the sun (769KB, mono, 1 min 39 sec, recorded 1965)

The Man From Uncle -- here is Barry Gray's cover version of the theme to "The Man From Uncle", which appeared on his 1966 "Lady Penelope Themes" EP (1 MB, mono, 2 min 23 sec, released June 1966)

Three Refined Mice -- in January 1967 Barry Gray released a six-song EP titled "Space Age Nursery Rhymes", which updates several well-known nursery rhymes.  This EP is quite charming, although it did not sell well and is now quite hard to find.  This particular song is an update of "Three Blind Mice", with vocals by Barry Gray himself!  (665k, mono, 1 min 25 sec, recorded September 1966)

Thunderbirds "The Man From MI. 5" -- from the 1967 EP "Great Themes from Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds", here is a little spy music recorded especially for this release, and was not actually heard in the episode with the same name (989k, mono, 2 min 7 sec, recorded September 1966)

Thunderbirds Are Go "Zero X" -- this is music recorded for film soundtrack LP "Thunderbirds Are Go", which has been rereleased on cassette and CD but has been out of print for several years. It is similar to music heard in the film when the Zero X craft is being prepared for launch (3.6 MB, stereo, 4 min 1 sec, recorded December 1966, released in 1967)

Man In A Suitcase -- The theme to "Man In A Suitcase", arranged and conducted (but not composed) by Barry Gray.  This was released on the EP "Captain Scarlet TV Themes"  (1 MB, mono, 2 min 21 sec, recorded August 1967)

Captain Scarlet End Theme -- this is from the 1967 EP "Captain Scarlet TV Themes", and is very similar to the end theme on the first 16 episodes of the Gerry & Sylvia Anderson TV series "Captain Scarlet".  (646k, mono, 1 min 23 sec, recorded August 1967)

Unused Captain Scarlet End Theme -- unreleased commercially and unheard in the series, this appears to be a trial version of the "Captain Scarlet" end theme, featuring vocals by Barry Gray himself!  (748 KB, mono, 1 min 36 sec, recorded 1967)

Captain Scarlet End Theme, Alternate Version #2 -- unreleased commercially and unheard in the series, here is another alternate version to the "Captain Scarlet" end theme.  (1.1 MB, mono, 1 min 17 sec, recorded 1967)

Captain Scarlet Pop Theme  -- unreleased commercially, but was included on the Fanderson EP "Music from the 21st Century", a membership gift in 1987.  This catchy tune is very similar to music heard on the radio in the Captain Scarlet episode "White As Snow"   (857 KB, mono, 1 min 50 sec, recorded May 1967)

Thunderbird 6 Titles (Skyship One Theme) -- here is the title theme to the second Gerry & Sylvia Anderson Thunderbirds film, "Thunderbird 6". At the time, no soundtrack album was released due to poor sales of the first film's soundtrack album, however a limited release soundtrack CD was finally released decades later (1 MB, mono, 2 min 20 sec, recorded February 1968)

Thunderbird 6 "The Grand Canyon" -- here is incidental music from Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's second Thunderbirds film, "Thunderbird 6".  This is heard when Skyship One is flying over the Grand Canyon. (1 MB, mono, 2 min 16 sec, recorded February 1968, never commercially released)

Secret Service End Theme -- unreleased commercially, this is the end theme to the little-seen Gerry & Sylvia Anderson TV series "Secret Service".  This theme is amongst Barry Gray's favorites, and features vocals by the Mike Sammes Singers (853 KB, mono, 1 min 27 sec, recorded November 1968)

Journey to the Far Side of the Sun "Traitor in the Lab" -- unreleased commercially, this is music from Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's first live action film, originally titled "Doppelganger".  This is from the very beginning of the film, as Herbert Lom's character is developing film taken with his "eye" camera (1.4 MB, mono, 2 min 31 sec, recorded March 1969)

"Journey to the Far Side of the Sun" Title Theme -- unreleased commercially, this is the title music to Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's first live action film, originally titled "Doppelganger".  And unlike the mono version heard on the home video, this version is in full stereo!  (1.9 MB, stereo, 2 min 5 sec, recorded March 1969)

Journey to the Far Side of the Sun "Crashlanding and Rescue" -- this spooky, meandering piece of electronic music is heard in the 1969 movie "Journey to the Far Side of the Sun", when the astronauts crash on the mirror planet and a rescue ship arrives. This commercially unreleased music is also very similar to the end music heard in the 1970 television series "UFO" (1 MB, mono, 2 min 17 sec, recorded March 1969)

Journey to the Far Side of the Sun "Sleeping Astronauts" -- this is music from Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's first live action film, originally titled "Doppelganger". It is heard when the astronauts are in hibernation during their journey to the mirror planet.
